Hello, I’m Stephen.
Since 2014, I have taught piano to students of ages from 3 – 70+. I have extensive experience in preparing students from AMEB/TCL exams, as well as non-exam repertoire and styles (pop & jazz are very welcome). I have also tutored composition, specifically for HSC Music, since 2016 and have routinely assisted students in achieving Band 6 results.
At the core of my teaching philosophy is fostering genuine motivation and enjoyment in practicing. This can be a tall order depending on the student, so I am always committed to understanding and outlining their piano growth plans collaboratively. Seeing students exceed their own expectations is profoundly rewarding.

I strive to make lessons an occasion to look forward to, rather than dread!
In addition to building a solid technical foundation and note-reading facility, I am interested in understanding a student’s own tastes and selecting repertoire accordingly. I will also occasionally instruct students to listen to other pieces to broaden their horizons, and potentially spur interest in music that was unfamiliar to them.
I generally spend a lot of time understanding how a student practices and working on optimising the process for them. Regular practice is critical for growth, but can seem incredibly boring and draining, so my students and I often test different approaches to find one that works.
My daughter’s piano progress has improved beyond my expectations. Stephen provides feedback to me after each lesson to ensure optimal musical development.
