My name is Alexis Sellies, I am a multi-instrumentalist music tutor and mentor based on the Northern Beaches and Merrylands in Sydney. For over 10 years, I have been teaching students of all ages in instrumental studies such as Guitar (Electric/Acoustic/Classical/Bass), Piano, Alto Saxophone, Flute, Ukulele and Voice at places such as Forte Music Dee Why, Institute of Popular Music Narrabeen, VIP Music Chatswood and Off Centre Music Windsor. Over the past 2 years, I have also introduced Music Theory Studies, AMEB and HSC Exam Preparation, Sound Engineer and Music Production lessons, and Artist/Musician Mentoring to my tutelage skillset.
Along with my experience, I have also studied at institutions such as The Sydney Conservatorium of Music (BMus Classical Guitar) and The Australian Institute of Music (BMus Music Production & Composition), and am currently completing my Bachelor of Music (Secondary Education) online at University of New England.
Throughout my years of teaching, I have based my pedagogical style around one simple fact; no two students are the same. Not every person has the same goals they want to achieve and the measurement of success is from the perspective of how each individual goes about achieving their own goals. Therefore, my purpose as a tutor is to identify what each student’s goals are and custom fit a plan to achieve those goals whilst building technique and refining their skillsets over time so they keep improving and enhancing their musical abilities.
Most of all, I love teaching and off-handing my knowledge to future musicians of all levels. I look forward to teaching all my students week-to-week and seeing them achieve their personal goals and aspirations in music no matter how small or large. Thank you for taking the time to read my TED Talk, and I hope to teach some of you in the future!
I start each student I teach with a free trial where I assess their level of playing skill and find what interests them musically. From there, weekly lessons of either 30/45/60 minutes are organised where we progressively go through learning the craft of playing their instrument.
I firmly believe that each student has their own style of learning, and as a tutor I create specific teaching modules and methods specifically for each student. In general, I like to teach a balanced mix of technical studies such as reading music notation (both Traditional and Tablature) and promoting good technique to my students, whilst working on material that the student personally enjoys such as songs from a favorite artist or style of playing.
In terms of technical studies, I follow a progressive method that works with the student from the ground up with basic music reading skills which slowly increases in technical difficulty, creating a linear method to increase the player’s music skills. I find that this method combined with external learning material from the student creates an effective learning process for all levels and age groups.
"Charlie's first lesson with Alexis was great! Having a free trial in our own home gave us a pressure free environment to scope out whether guitar lessons were doable, and my son came out of the lesson feeling motivated...We bought him his first guitar this weekend and are very keen to proceed with regular weekly lessons!"
Leea Taylor (Mother of Charlie Taylor)
"I recently had my first lesson with Alexis and found his musical knowledge and teaching skills to be of the highest standards. I am looking forward to continue learning with him and highly recommend any student of all levels looking to take guitar lessons to consider Alexis as their tutor."
