I am a guitarist, singer and songwriter and have performed around Sydney for years under my songwriter stage name Victoria Jayne Young, but have found that I enjoy teaching as much, if not more than performing.
Classical guitar was my first musical love at age 10; I have studied with the Sydney Academy of Spanish Guitar, Sydney Conservatorium Open University, and continue to study with George Wills, recent Masters graduate of classical and baroque guitar at Sydney Con.
I have also learnt finger style blues and folk guitar for many years with John Morris of the Blues Preachers, and can read and teach both tablature and music notation.
If you are also a singer I can teach you correct breath control, placement and projection as the foundation for all styles of singing. I have had over three years of classical voice training with Sydney opera singer and teacher Maria Timofeeva.
Theory and preparation for AMEB and ABRSM exams also available.
There is no set syllabus I follow; lessons will be prepared based on what you want to learn, and will include material from a number of sources, for technical exercises, pieces, and exams if that is something you are interested in.
You will need to buy some music books or sheet music, depending on what you’re learning.
If you are an absolute beginner in guitar, Don King’s Play the Guitar – book one is a good place to start.
With voice lessons for beginners, it will be about breathing and vocalising exercises by ear, so no music or books required. You can record the lesson on your phone to refer back to between lessons if you like. This can be good especially for daily breathing practise.
