Learn piano, pipe organ or professional development with an internationally renowned soloist, dedicated pedagogue and experienced adjudicator- in your own home (St George, Sutherland Shire) or in studio (Lugarno/Mortdale). European and Russian School trained, I hold Bachelor’s and Master’s performance degrees from elite European and Australian conservatories. I maintain an artistic practice as an internationally renowned concert pianist and performance practice specialist, performing some of the world’s most difficult repertoire. To see my artistic CV please visit www.mariawelna.com
To learn with me – the best way to initially get in touch is through email or text (we respond quickly). We can then arrange a phone chat. Please include information such as your location and previous piano background/level. My coverage for lessons in students’ homes is greater than the suburbs listed under locations. I cover most of the Sutherland Shire and St George.
Both exam and non-exam tuition is available. I have a current WWCC and am experienced with teaching both children and adults. My curriculum (whether for AMEB, ABRSM, Trinity, St Cecilia, HSC 2/Extension exams or own enjoyment) is based on quality performance practice standards and is individually tailored to each student. It develops quality skills, creativity, effective practice strategies and a growing sense of independent learning and learning with understanding (where relevant).
I’m an Australian performance practice specialist and teacher who maintains an artistic practice as a concert pianist, concert organist, composer and soprano on the national and international scene (www.mariawelna.com). My musical pedigree can be traced to world-renowned music conservatories, and a number of distinguished concert artists/professors. Furthermore, as a performance practice specialist, I myself specialise in the golden age of pianism and its concert-virtuoso tradition.
I hold Bachelor and Master’s degrees in performance from Katowice, Poland and Sydney, Australia. I also have teaching qualifications (for teaching instrumental music in primary and secondary schools), wide education experience and pedagogical knowledge. I’ve taught advanced piano in selective music schools in Europe, maintained a piano studio in Australia, taught voice and acted as a music director/répétiteur for many years, completed a postgraduate ‘Principles of Studio Pedagogy’ unit at the Sydney Conservatorium and have experience as a piano adjudicator/examiner within NSW and ACT (at all levels i.e. from P Plate piano to 8th grade AMEB as well as Certificate of Performance). I have taught piano at the Conservatorium Open Academy, am a member of the Accompanists’ Guild of NSW and have maintained membership of the Music Teachers’ Association of NSW for some years.
My more than nine years of instrumental pedagogy experience (all as a tertiary degree qualified performer and teacher), professional industry experience and strong performance background ensures that I teach students excellent performance skills in an organised, reliable and enthusiastic manner. A professional of the younger generation, I relate well to all age groups. I already have 15 years of performance experience as a concert pianist and chamber musician at elite levels, and almost 25 years experience with music/performance. I’m experienced with exam syllabuses such as AMEB, ABRSM, Trinity College London and I maintain regular professional development. I have given guest lectures at the tertiary level and lecture/recitals within my fields of expertise. I am familiar with the classroom music curriculum (particularly HSC Music 2/Extension and its performance component). During my own high school years in Australia, I was a scholarship music student at a selective music school (for piano, voice, violin, pipe organ, composition) contributing to school life through many selective ensemble, solo performance and accompaniment commitments.
I am committed to musical excellence and believe in truly helping each student attain his/her full potential in a creative, inspiring and motivating way, whether this results in exam preparation, competitions or simply appreciating the joy that learning music brings. My teaching philosophy focuses on an individual approach to each student, fostering musicality, a love of repertoire and interpretive insight through every step of the learning process. I also teach students to value the highest level of technique (which is not only about proficiency but also encompasses tone production, phrasing, stylistic refinement and musicianship), musical understanding and performance temperament. As a performance specialist I develop performance skills by helping students become more confident performers (whether this means overcoming performance anxiety or finding their own unique voice). I also offer one-on-one piano professional development for musicians, piano, voice and instrumental teachers.
I welcome students based on merit and/or eager to learn as part of my studio. Payment is per lesson (no advance payments for the whole term) and you can join my studio year round. An individual program will be tailored to students’ learning needs for long-term tuition. If you have multiple family members interested in lessons we can book back to back times.
